Lukashenko Maxine

about

And so it is just after mid-summer and it's a good time to put out a new song for your delectation, but it didn’t happen like that at all.

I was discussing Eastern European politics with Miss Maxine the other day and was continually amused by the fact that she can never remember the surname of the dictator of Belarus and so, my mind being what it is, as I was going to sleep that night I found myself writing a song about the whole situation. It's the sort of thing I do innit?

If you want to pay for it, it will be another quid towards my moral degeneration.

lyrics

You messaged me on Facebook
to tell that you thought that I should know
that the dictator of Belarus was in hospital in Moscow,
was it time for him to go
were they going to give him Novicek
had he outlived his usefulness to Putin's regime
would he be replaced by some faceless apparatchik
yes man if you know what I mean

You're the only chick I ever met
who finds politics as entertaining as I do
but you malaprop like crazy and
it's one of the reasons I love you
and you often get names wrong and it always makes me laugh
and leads me down a rabbit hole beside the garden path
and you've done it again this time and though I tease you about it
you insist that you know best and it always makes me shout

Its Lukashenko Maxine
Its Lukashenko Maxine
And then you change the subject talking about rebel ants
and clearing my kitchen windowsill if you get half a chance
Its Lukashenko Maxine

The situation in Eastern Europe is enduringly fascinating
to folk like you and me
who find amusement from the antics of our leaders
who never learn the lessons of history
this is something we should act on we've got the facts on
make a pact on but we very seldom do
so you and I sit laughing making bets on armageddon
like I promised that we'd do

when I told you once that I'd be waiting for you
like a pilgrim at the end of the world
I never thought that it would fall apart so bloody quickly
when the battle flags unfurled
and that it seems to me that wherever we look
the world still doesn't make much sense
though if I'm truthful I'm not sure it ever did
and those who thought so were just blinded by pretence
